Smokers should consider the rights of non-smokers

March 15, 2005

Dear Editor:

The recent opinions published about the idea of a smoking ban in public areas in Danville has struck a fire in the minds of many smokers who feel their rights are being taken away from them. Those smokers don't even take a minute to consider the rights of non-smokers each time they light up in a restaurant.

Our right to breathe clean air is infringed at any establishment where smoking is permitted. We have no choice how polluted the air we breathe inside is, but smokers are able to choose whether they smoke up the area or not - talk about rights.

Smokers would claim that non-smokers have their own sections, but their smoke still travels through the hardly divided sections. It's much more reasonable to ask someone with an urge so great to step 25 feet outside to smoke, than it is to request that we all just start eating outside with enclosures around each table.

Second-hand smoke is just as harmful, if not more harmful, than being a smoker, and to me it's unfair that my health is jeopardized because someone else doesn't care to consider that they share air.

Lexington has had a successful campaign with its smoking ban. Let's give the health-conscious citizens of this area a place to breathe the clean air we need to breathe.
