March 16, 2005

The Danville High School Academic Team earned two state champion awards and placed third overall Friday through Monday at the 20th Kentucky Academic Championships (Governor's Cup).

The event consists of competitions for students in math, science, language arts, composition, social studies, arts and humanities, future problem solving, and Quick Recall. The DHS team had entries in seven of the eight events.

Stephan Crown-Weber was the state champion in arts and humanities, and Rachel Beckman was state champion in language arts. They came out on top after qualifying for the state championships through district and regional competition. No other school in Kentucky won more than one event.

With so many strong performances, the team finished third in the overall competition. State powers Dupont Manual and Dunbar, both magnet programs, finished first and second. The third-place finish was the best ever for Danville in the history of the event.
