Danville band boosters appreciate support

April 01, 2005

Dear Editor:

The recent vote by the Danville High School Band Boosters to host the KYPAA Cherry Regional Band Contest would not have been possible without the support of the school administration and the athletics department.

The contest will bring renewed recognition to the DHS band program, a program that is very much on the rebound thanks to director Jeff Towns. Even though most of the focus appears to be on the high school band, the money that will be raised from hosting the KYPAA contest also supports the middle school program. Larger instrument purchases such as tubas, percussion instruments, money for travel to concert festivals, music purchases and instrument repairs are at least partially funded through the booster organization. The same also applies to the high school program. Scholarships, money for additional instructors, uniforms, marching drill writers and music arrangers are also funded in part by the booster organizations.

Music programs are not cheap, but they are a very important component to the vitality of any school district. They provide not only music education but also the same benefits of social interaction, competitive training and individual growth that our sports programs provide to our athletes. I would like to encourage the local community to come out and see what the sport of competitive marching band is all about on Oct. 1 and support your local music programs.

I would also like to specifically thank Superintendent Bob Rowland, DHS principal Joseph Payne, Bate Principal Michael Godbey and Athletics Director Sam Harp for their support, without it the music programs at Danville will not continue to grow.
