May 13, 2005

John Nelson, managing editor of The Advocate-Messenger, was awarded the David Birney Hope Award at the Salvation Army banquet Thursday. The award is named in honor of the late Episcopalian bishop, who was on the Danville advisory board, and worked hard to fulfill the organization's mission of hope.

The Salvation Army also gave out Extra Mile awards for groups and businesses that worked with the organization this year. Those awards went to: The Advocate-Messenger, Centre College, Danville Office Equipment, First Christian Church, Heart of Kentucky United Way, Hitachi of Harrodsburg, Kiwanis Club of Danville, Kroger, Presbyterian Church, Rotary Club of Danville, Rotary Club of Harrodsburg, Stuart Powell Ford-Mazda, Symbiotix and Timberland.

Jack Vaught was named volunteer of the year at the Salvation Army's thrift store, and Carroll Perkins was the Corps' volunteer of the year.
