May 23, 2005

The Danville Garden Club's design, construction and maintenance of the Mary Gammon Akin Kitchen Herb Garden at the rear of Grayson Tavern in Constitution Square State Park recently won two blue ribbons.

The Garden Club was awarded a blue ribbon from the Garden Club of Kentucky. The project then was submitted by the state club to the South Atlantic Region, representing seven states, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Georgia and Kentucky. The Danville club won the Civic Beautification Award and a cash prize.

Constitution Square State Park manager Brenda Willoughby said, "This period culinary herb garden enhances the site and educates the public about herbs and history."

This has been a communitywide project with donations, discounts and services provided by the Rental Service Center, Key's Nursery and Landscape, Constitution Squared State Park, Hoot Owl Nursery, Pots Plus, Timberland Inc., Ethington Lumber and the Garden Club of Kentucky.
