Memorial Day events scheduled

Memorial Day observances scheduled in this area will be Saturday and Monday.

Camp Nelson

George Webb, who manages 26 national cemeteries in nine states, will be the guest speaker at Camp Nelson National Cemetery Memorial Day ceremonies at 11 a.m. Monday.

Webb is director of the National Cemetery Administration's Memorial Service Network IV.

The ceremony will include music, poetry, prayer, the national anthem, retiring of colors, placing of a wreath and taps.

The White House at Camp Nelson will be open from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War will have a memorial service behind the rock wall cul de sac following the ceremony.

Casey County

Memorial Day ceremonies will be held at noon Saturday at Cold Springs Primitive Baptist Church seven miles west of Liberty on Ky. 70.

The Vannoy, Hamm, Cleary, Davis and Greer families and friends will sponsor the service.

A flag that was flown over the Capitol Aug. 16 will be raised at the church. The program includes the national anthem, a veterans roll call with presentations of flags to all family members of veterans, and taps. A wreath will be placed near the flag pole.

A potluck lunch will be served on the church grounds. Tables, plates and flatware and napkins will be available; guests are asked to bring chairs.

Parking will be available at Phelps Elementary School across the road from the church.

Liberty

Local veterans will host a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at the doughboy statue in front of the Casey County Courthouse. Master of ceremonies will be Donald Smithers, and the guest speaker will be Lt. Tammy Hill. She is in the Navy Nurse Corps.

There will be a ceremony with a wreath, flag and the playing of taps to remember veterans.
