Dear Editor:
I'd like to know if our city commisioners researched various alternatives before their decision to assess everyone a $10 per month trash pickup fee? I don't believe that everyone should have to pay for a service if they don't use it. Also, why should someone on a limited income who only puts one bag out per week, pay the same as a family of eight that puts out 10 bags per week?
I know of a community that charges by the bag. How do they do it? They sell garbage bags through the local grocery stores. You can buy them individually or purchase a roll of 10 at a cost of $15. I'm sure the grocery store gets a percentage. The bags are marked in some way as to identify them as being purchased from the city. All trash has to be in a bag in order to be picked up. This way, everyone pays for the service they use - no more, no less. They also provide a once-a-month recycling pickup and supply the containers.
