Commission passes first reading of smoking ban

June 15, 2005

Danville wants to snuff out butts in city buildings.

Commissioners approved first reading of an ordinance to ban public smoking in city-owned buildings Monday. If it is given a second reading, the ordinance could take effect in July.

Smoking areas for city employees will be created inside buildings, as is required by Kentucky law, said City Manager Darrell Blenniss.

There will be no smoking in city-owned vehicles, and the ordinance forbids discarding butts on the grounds of city property, including city sidewalks.

Blenniss said after the meeting that there had been no complaints among employees about not smoking in city vehicles.

No one would be allowed to smoke within 10 feet of a city-owned building.

The code enforcement department will enforce the ordinance. The penalty is a $25 fine.
