Lincoln man, 86, taking comedy act to Renfro Valley

June 17, 2005|S. SCOTT GOWERS

STANFORD - Local comedian George Garrison will perform his comedy routine this weekend at Renfro Valley's Jamboree.

The Jamboree is a 90-minute variety show featuring country music performances by the Renfro Valley entertainers and comedy routines. This will be Garrison's first cameo as a comedian.

"At one time, I thought I'd like to be a comedian, but every time I got up to talk, people would laugh at me and I couldn't take it," jokes Garrison.

His beginnings in comedy were with joke-telling and other funny, often tall tales told around family gatherings and at small venues. This is Garrison's first time at Renfro Valley as a comedian but not his first time onstage at Renfro. He's also played fiddle at the annual fiddlers convention held in the fall. His father bought the German-made fiddle about 70 years ago.

Garrison, who celebrated his 86th birthday June 3, was born in Bourbon County, raised in Boyle and has lived in Lincoln County for more than a half century. He and his wife have resided in the oldest one-room school house in Lincoln County for 54 years. His wife, Margaret, attended first grade at the old Mount Zenia School.

Performances are scheduled throughout the week as well as festivals and special events during the summer and into fall. This weekend's barn dance will feature Julie Roberts at 7 p.m. Saturday in the New Barn. The Jamboree follows at 9 p.m. in the Old Barn.
