Casey fiscal court braces for insurance premium hike

June 22, 2005|BRENDA EDWARDS

LIBERTY - The Casey Fiscal Court is bracing for a 30 percent increase in insurance premiums.

Judge-Executive Ronald Wright said Monday that premiums will go up by $44,900 for the next fiscal year by using Kentucky Association of Counties' plan.

The premiums this year are $148,000 and will increase to $193,000 July 1.

The court approved KACo to carry the county's liability, workmen's comprehensive and personnel insurance.

Wright said he attempted to get quotes from local carriers, but since the insurance will become due July 1, the court decided not to wait for other bids.

Wright said the county has had low loss rates, but KACo says premiums are going up statewide.

"Other counties are having a hard time getting quotes, too," he said. He added that the county cannot operate without insurance and "we can't afford to let it run out."

Magistrate Kenny Morgan said KACo warned the county earlier this year that rates would increase.

In other matters, the court:

-- Approved a $6.6 million budget for the coming fiscal year.

-- Accepted $50,000 in excess fees from the county clerk's office.

-- Named John Shugars and Carole Tarter as members for the Casey County Public Library to replace Joberta Wells and Freida Vanoy.

-- Accepted bids from Brown Food Service to provide food and Flavorich Milk Co. for the county jail.

-- Agreed to pay $50 each for four members of the Board of Assessment appeals board and the state will pay another $50 for each.
