Boyle, Mercer get arts grants

Boyle and Mercer are among 32 counties to share in $923,944 in matching General Operating Support Grants awarded by the Kentucky Arts Council to enrich arts and cultural life across the state.

The council approved panel recommendations for operational support funding for 66 non-profit organizations whose primary purpose is to provide year-round arts programming.

The Arts Commission of Danville/Boyle County got $1,570 from the General Operating Support II program. The Arts Commission is an "umbrella organization" that strives to represent and serve all artists and arts organizations within the community. It provides a bridge between the arts and the community by promoting and encouraging the work of artists and arts organizations. The Arts Commission has also fostered partnerships among the arts, the business sector and local government.

The Ragged Edge Community Theater in Harrodsburg got $2,046 from the General Operating Support I program. The theatre began as an amateur, volunteer non-profit organization. Since it's beginning, it has developed its mission and become a cultural arts center, providing and promoting the performing arts, increasing the cultural and educational opportunities, visual art and high quality entertainment for the community of Mercer County and Central Kentucky.

The Arts Council's competitive General Operating Support I and II grant programs awards are based on the size of an organization's operating budget combined with their ability to meet to specific performance expectations in arts delivery, networking and collaboration, diversity, and promoting the value of the arts.

The reach of the General Operating Support Grant program is diverse both geographically and in the type of arts and cultural programming the funding provides.

Among the group of grantees are educational and training programs, performing festivals, craft and visual arts membership organizations, orchestras, theatre groups, art museums, and community development programs.
