Nine die in weekend traffic accidents

FRANKFORT - Preliminary statistics show that nine people died as a result of eight separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways during the July Fourth holiday period, which ran from 6 p.m. Friday through 11:59 p.m. Monday. The number of fatalities and crashes is the same as those recorded last year during the same holiday period.

Of the nine fatalities, preliminary data indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in five of the crashes. Three of the nine victims were not wearing seat belts. Four were riding on motorcycles and one was riding a bicycle.

Three of the four motorcycle victims were not wearing helmets.

One double fatality crash occurred in Lincoln County. Single fatality crashes occurred in Anderson, Barren, Cumberland, Fayette, Marion, Nelson and Scott counties.

Through July 4, a total of 436 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 26 less than reported for this time period in 2004. Two-hundred-and-fifty-two of these 436 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.

The statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
