Burgin Christian marking 175th anniversary

July 08, 2005

BURGIN - Burgin Christian Church plans to recognize and celebrate a milestone this weekend.

The congregation has planned a three-day tent revival, community gospel sing and special services to mark the 175th anniversary of the church's founding.

Kicking off the celebration will be the tent revival, beginning at 6 p.m. tonight in a tent behind the church itself in Burgin. The Rev. Ola Harrison will be the featured speaker, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own picnic suppers. Drinks will be provided.

A community gospel sing will highlight the second night of the celebration at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The sing will be in a tend behind the church itself in Burgin, and features Second Time Around from Southland Christian Church; Larry Sanders and the Borderline Band; the Bruner's Chapel Praise Group; and Chapel Hill Quartet.

And at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, the Rev. Proctor Riggins will provide the service while the Riggins Brothers will sing. An ice cream social will follow the service.

According to a history of the church written by John T. Brown in 1904, The Disciples of Christ formed Burgin Christian Church in 1830, breaking away from the Baptist Church at Shawnee Run. The split was an amicable one, and the two churches used the same house of worship on alternate Sundays for a time.

The Disciples of Christ resolved to meet each Sunday, however, and began holding worship services in a log school house on the south side of the road leading to Dix River near Cane Run stream.

A large brick building was erected on property deeded by John Bowman Sr., and in 1894 that building was sold and a new building was built in the city of Burgin. N.I. Buster, Preston Burgin, J.T. Voris and Dr. Perry were the instrumental figures in settling the church at the site where the old building still resides. The church remains basically the same since its construction with the original windows and interiors.

The public is invited to all three days of the anniversary celebration.
