Mercer County Fair opens Monday

July 20, 2005|ANN HARNEY

HARRODSBURG - Fair-goers here will notice some improvements to the fairgrounds of the Mercer County Fair and Horse Show when it opens Monday.

Dr. LeMayne Ellis, president of the fair board, said the old fairgrounds have been given a bit of a facelift with repainting, paving and a new horse show office.

Entering the office, one gets a sense of the old along with the new because the old cabinetry is being used in the new office and the office is in the same place as the old one. People who work in the office, however, notice a big difference. For one, they now have their own bathroom and central air conditioning.

A week before the fair, work is being done to make improvements. Fair goers and residents driving down Linden Avenue will notice a new sign that was still being worked on Tuesday.

"There has been a lot of renovation, painting and cleaning as best we can," Ellis said.

There will be a truck tug- of -war Monday night at the motor sports track, Ellis said. A concert will be held there Tuesday night with local artists performing and featuring the Wild Rose Band.

The Kentucky Truck Pullers Association will hold events Wednesday and Thursday and a local truck pull will be held Friday. The fair concludes at the motor sports track Saturday with a demolition derby.

Ellis said plans are for local National Guard members who have served in Iraq to be grand marshals of the parade Monday night at 6 p.m. downtown.

Pageants from the youngest to the oldest will be spread over two nights. The following will be held on Monday night in the center ring:

* Little Miss and Mister, 7 p.m.

* Tiny Miss and Mister, 8 p.m.

* Miss Pre-teen, 9 p.m.

Tuesday night in the center ring, the following pageants will be held:

* Miss Teen Pageant, 6 p.m.

* Miss Mercer Fair, 8 p.m.

Always well attended is the Baby Show that will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

``It will go off on time,'' Ellis said. Participants need to plan to be at the center ring before the start of the show and they need to allow for extra time because traffic is historically bad on Wednesday evening and there is only one entrance to the fairgrounds.

The fair gets off to an official start this Saturday with the Dairy Show.
