Dangerous traffic situation a concern

August 23, 2005

Dear Editor:

We wish to thank The Advocate-Messenger for its coverage of the Planning and Zoning meeting Aug. 17, at which a proposed housing development off of Buster Pike and Shakertown Road (Ky. 33) was discussed.

At the meeting, we stated that a pioneer cemetery once existed on the property. We would like to clarify one issue concerning tombstones in this cemetery. A statement was made that no tombstones were found in the stone fence that was recently removed from the property. The stone fence that was recently removed was in front of the site of the original log farmhouse. The unmarked tombstones that marked the pioneer graves were not in that fence, but were part of a low wall behind the log house. Both the log house and this low wall were removed many years ago but the existence of the cemetery was known by an earlier owner of the property.

While the historical aspects of this property are important, our neighborhood is more concerned about the dangerous traffic situation that will occur if the development is built and will adversely affect the residents of Shakertown Road, Gwinn Island Road, Mock's Creek Manor and Buster Pike. The only entrance to the proposed development is near the bottom of a hill with an incline each way and a dangerous curve. At the meeting, it was stated that traffic studies indicate a probable 10 trips per day for each household. With 145 households proposed, 1,450 total trips would be generated each day, greatly increasing the amount of traffic that will flow onto Ky. 33. This situation will create even more traffic problems and potential accidents than are occurring now.

Finally, it has been asked how state or local governments can justify allowing any individual to monetarily contribute to a government-funded project, such as a sewer, with anticipation of personal gain. An answer to that question would be greatly appreciated by our community.
