She said the national recommendations for homework is 10 minutes per hour per grade. Kids in the second through fifth grades spend three hours on homework each night. "That takes the joy out of learning."

Coffey said some teachers also lack the enthusiasm and enjoyment they had in the classroom. "We feel that has been stripped away from us for fear of doing more harm than good in the long run."

KERA not implemented correctly

She thinks framers of KERA were brilliant, but said the program was not implemented correctly in Kentucky. "Funding has not been keeping up with education," she said.

She also is not in favor of the way testing is being administrated in the schools. She thinks there are more authentic ways of testing than is used. She said students should be continuously assessed rather than just in some classes.

While Coffey is not happy about some changes in education, she thinks Family Resource Centers have been a good move for the state and county.

When she started working with the centers, there was only one licensed day care center in the county, but no infant or school age care.

"Now we serve more than 200 kids that receive quality services."
