Students to collect money at football game for Katrina victims

They may be rivals on the football field, but at the gate tonight students from Boyle County and Danville high schools will unite to raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

"I think it shows that we can engage in friendly competition and still unite for more serious causes," said Cortney Miller, student council president at BCHS.

In the past, the two schools have competed to raise money for causes but decided to get together for the people on the Gulf Coast.

"It's seems inappropriate to compete to raise money for this cause," said Sam Pollom, student council president at DHS.

The two presidents expect collaboration from the council members, cheerleaders and other clubs at their schools. Students from both schools will get together at 12:30 p.m. today to organize their effort.

"I think a lot of people want to contribute but might not know how," Pollom said.

"This is a perfect opportunity because half the town will be attending (the game,)" Miller said. Danville and Boyle County play tonight at Admiral Stadium.

Pollom and Miller say excitement about the game is building in the schools. At DHS, more students are wearing Admiral blue.

"This time of year we see a lot of school pride," Pollom said.

At BCHS the seniors have some T-shirt theme cooked up, but Miller was hesitant to let the secret out.

Danville Assistant Coach Vaughn Little said, "I want the kids to understand that when we play football, it's just a football game, and afterwards we have to be a community."

The images, pictures and stories coming from the Gulf Coast have clearly struck the students.

Pollom said he was used to seeing devastation in other parts in the world. "Seeing it in the United States just really hit home," he said.

Miller said, "People are saying things will never be the same."

All of the money collected will go to the Red Cross.
