A Jessamine County man is in jail charged in connection with a murder that happened in California 23 years ago.

Phillip Jude Kennedy, 47, of 703 S. Central Ave., is lodged at the Jessamine County Detention Center with bond denied. He was arrested Friday night at the Nicholasville Police Department.

He was arraigned by video Wednesday in Jessamine Circuit Court, and an extradition hearing has been set for Monday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m.

Kennedy is charged in California in connection with a homicide in Long Beach, Calif. in 1982.

He lived in Hawthorne, Calif. and Lancaster before moving to Nicholasville in 2000.

He has been in the Jessamine County jail twice before this year: the first time on April 28 for domestic assault, and again on July 31 for violating an emergency protective order.

The Jessamine County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case, and detective John Bourne said he could not discuss the case because it is not yet closed.

Nancy Pratt, public relations officer for the Long Beach Police Department, said the same thing, but added that as soon as she could divulge more details she would do so.

It is not known by The Jessamine Journal the identity of the person murdered, or the circumstances surrounding the death.|10/6/05|***
