Lady Colts mount huge comeback to beat Sayre

October 08, 2005|Josh Thomas

In a matter of 21 minutes last Thursday, the West Jessamine Lady Colts soccer team erased and conquered a three-goal deficit against the Sayre Lady Spartans, winning 4-3 at home.

After a tough 3-1 loss to the Lafayette Lady Generals three days prior, the home team came out sluggish and Sayre took full advantage, pounding in three first-half goals.

Despite the sizable deficit, spirits remained high in the halftime huddle for the Lady Colts.

"Even though we gave up three goals, if you could see the kids at halftime, you could realize that we weren't out of the ballgame," said West head Coach DeAngelo Wiser. "We've been able to put the ball in the back of the net this year, so the kids didn't believe they were out of it. They knew they could get it done and they just kept attacking and things snowballed."

The snowball started rolling nearly 13 minutes into the second half when freshman Tasha Boden knocked in a cross to the far post on an assist from Ashley Cobane, also a freshman.

Juniors Dusty Gay and Kristin Collins kept things going just eight minutes later when Collins sent a ball to Gay in the middle of the field for a through ball goal to cut the Spartans' lead to one.

The equalizer came once again from Boden and Cobane, in a play much like the initial ice-breaker.

Sophomore Lindsey Williams, ever the offensive threat, put her Lady Colts on top with an unassisted goal from 25 yards out with just six minutes left in the match.

"It's something that I, personally, haven't seen since I've been around here," Wiser said. "It's just a tribute to the kids that they were able to do that. We were kidding about people leaving at halftime."

On Saturday, the Lady Colts stood toe-to-toe with the fifth-ranked Lexington Catholic Lady Knights, losing by one goal, 4-3, on a breakaway with 15 seconds left.

The Lady Colts will take on the LCA Lady Eagles in the first round of the district tournament at Lafayette Tuesday at 8 p.m.
