Crab Orchard lifts water advisory

CRAB ORCHARD - The City of Crab Orchard Water Department has lifted a boil water advisory. The advisory was due to a recent waterline replacement, which had the potential to allow contamination to enter the water system. All sample testing has come back clean of contaminate and is safe to drink.

Garden Club sponsors decorating contest

STANFORD - Stanford Garden Club is sponsoring a Christmas Decorating Contest for businesses on Main Street in Stanford. The theme of the contest is Old Fashioned Christmas. First-, second- and third-place winners will be named Dec. 3, the day of the Christmas parade.

Lincoln Health Department to have flu clinic

STANFORD - The Lincoln County Health Department will hold a flu clinic from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. The clinic will be based upon Centers for Disease Control guidelines for flu vaccine. The clinic is for people 64 and older and children 6 months and up. For information, call (606) 365-3106.

Event to fund Stanford Christmas decorations

STANFORD - A chili supper and art auction will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Historic Stanford Depot. The auction will begin at 7 p.m. Proceeds will be used to purchase Christmas decorations for downtown Stanford.

Mock emergency set in Somerset

SOMERSET - First responders from Boyle, Casey, Lincoln and Mercer counties will join nine other counties in a mock emergency exercise Saturday in Somerset.

The exact emergency won't be announced until that day at Southern Elementary School in Somerset. The state Department of Homeland Security is sponsoring the exercise, called "School House Rocked," to test the region's preparedness for a large-scale disaster.

St. James church plans food sale

A food sale will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at St. James AME Church, East Walnut Street. Dinners will be served at the church. Carryouts also are available by calling (859) 236-3241.

Attendance up in Casey schools

LIBERTY - Attendance in the Casey County schools averaged 95 percent for the past couple of months, according to Dale Wilson, director of pupil personnel.

In September, students had an average of 97.32 percent attendance, certified personnel 95.78 percent and classified personnel 92.50 percent.

Phelps Elementary had the highest average for students at 97.70 percent and the highest percentage for certified personnel at 95.78. Middleburg had the highest attendance for classified personnel with 98.75 percent.

Fundraiser to benefit teacher

A fundraiser will be held Nov. 8 to help with expenses of Jean Crawford of Danville, a teacher who has worked in Lincoln and Danville school systems and most recently in Jessamine County.

The fundraiser will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at John Michael Montgomery's Bar and Grill at the intersection of old U.S. 27 and the Nicholasville bypass in Nicholasville near Applebee's.

Items are being accepted for an auction. Meal tickets that include a sandwich, side order and drink can be bought for $10, and $1 will be given to Crawford.

A Jean Crawford Fund has been started at Citizens National Bank in Jessamine County. Donations also can sent to Cornerstone Baptist Church, 104 W. Maple St., Nicholasville 40356.

Crawford had her large intestine removed about nine years ago and about a month ago, her small intestine twisted at the bottom and her colon had to be removed, said Wendy Maxwell, a friend who lives in Danville.

Crawford is being fed through an IV and that is affecting her liver, Maxwell said.

ACT registration deadline is Nov. 4

College-bound high school students can take the ACT college admission and placement exam Dec. 10. The deadline for postmark or online registration is Nov. 4.

The late registration deadline is Nov. 17 (an additional $15 fee is required for late registration). Students can get registration materials from their high school counselor or register online at www.actstudent.org. Students can also find the testing location closest to them on this Web site.

The basic registration fee for the ACT is $29. An additional $14 fee is required for the ACT Writing Test.

MEETINGS

Danville-Boyle County Recreation Commission - 4 p.m. today at city hall to discuss a water fountain, park committee report, fees for youth cheerleading, director's report, park policies, use of Millennium Park, jingle bell run, cross country meet and new board member.

Liberty City Council - 5 p.m. today at City Hall for a special meeting. The agenda includes setting trick-or-treat hours, the theater project, first reading of property tax ordinance, a mayor's report and an executive session to discuss personnel.
