Girls' soccer teams bow out of district tourney

Both the East and West Jessamine girls soccer teams fell prey to tough competition in the 27th district tournament last week held last Thursday, Oct. 13, at Lafayette High in Lexington.

The East Jessamine Lady Jags (8-9-2) were the first to take a bow, falling 3-0 to the fifth-ranked Lady Knights of Lexington Catholic (12-4-3).

The Knights struck first, a shot from sophomore Katie Breathitt just 20 minutes into the match. The underdog Jags held their opponents for the rest of the half, keeping the score at 1-0 until Kate McKelway and senior Katherine Caudill booted in a pair of goals to complete the shutout.

Goalkeepers Kristin Bowen and Courtney Thompson guarded the box for Lexington Catholic (12-4-3) in the shutout.

In the other semifinal match-up, the West Jessamine Lady Colts failed to take revenge for an earlier loss to the Lafayette Lady Generals (7-9-2), falling by a close 2-1 margin on the Generals' home field.

Remembering a match with the Generals on Sept. 26 in which the Lady Colts (15-6-1) fell behind after losing composure and focus, head Coach DeAngelo Wiser had warned his team to keep their wits about them in the tournament.

They seemed to have taken their head honcho's words of wisdom to heart.

The visiting team knocked in the first goal of the game, a boot from sophomore Lindsey Williams.

"We played about as hard as we could," Wiser said. "Lafayette just stepped up from the previous game. We had a few opportunities to score, but I feel like it was more their experience that gave them the advantage."

Lafayette's Ashley Taylor scored an equalizer late in the first half, but fellow General Kate LaBoone broke the tie in the second half, slipping in a shot past West goalkeeper Rachel Leffel with about six minutes left on the clock.

Wiser should sleep well at night knowing that his young team returns intact next season, but he and his team had an "empty feeling" after the loss.

"With the talent we had, we had the ability to get the job done," he said. "We felt like we left a little something on the table. We wanted to take it a step further to get them some experience in the regional tournament. But it's a learning experience."
