Illegal dumping targeted in Forkland

October 30, 2005|LIZ MAPLES

Broken glass littered the creek at Ky. 1108 and Ky. 37 Friday. County workers hauled away half a pick-up truck load of glass out of the creek.

"I believe somebody is dumping the glass after removing the aluminum from windows," said Donna Fechter, Boyle County's solid waste coordinator.

The glass poses a safety threat to residents, who use the creek for recreation, and to solid waste crews, who must clean up the dump.

Fechter said in the past four months the county is responding to open dump complaints in Forkland once a week, when it used to be maybe once a month. Solid waste workers are picking up construction and demolition debris.

"I am growing more concerned and need the help of the people who live in the Forkland area," Fechter said.

Anyone who wants to report suspected illegal dumping may make an anonymous report of license plate numbers or other information by calling (859) 238-1116. The calls may be made 24 hours a day. Fechter asked the state to provide camera surveillance in the Forkland area.

The Forkland Convenience Center is for county residents to dispose of household trash, not construction or demolition debris. Contractors, subcontractors and out-of-county residents can not use the convenience center, but they can call BFI at (859) 236-7707 or M&M Sanitation at (859) 936-1600 to rent a Dumpster. Debris can also be brought to either of those companies or Tri-K Landfill in Stanford, (606) 365-7806.

It is important for residents to report any illegal use of the convenience centers, Fechter said.

Boyle residents can dump trash 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. "Please, don't throw trash over or next to the fence after closing," Fechter said.

The Boyle County Fiscal Court budgeted for a staff person and a compactor this fiscal year for the Forkland Convenience Center.
