Danville City Commissioner Jamey Gay announced today he will run for mayor in the 2006 election.

"I hope to extend the vision that came into focus over the past eight years by continuing a quality growth plan for Danville and Boyle County that will preserve the beauty and integrity of the city while encouraging the managed growth of Danville and Boyle County," Gay said in a press release.

Gay is head athletic trainer and assistant athletic director at Centre College. He said if he wins he expects to continue in those positions.

His campaign was announced by The Idea Farm, a local public relations firm.

Gay's platform will be job growth, planning for infrastructure needs and initiating youth programs, particularly ones that discourage drug use.

"Drug use is a particular problem in our community, one that does not get the focus I think it should. I hope my candidacy will focus on the need to eliminate this horrible drag on our community."

He is a director of PBK Bank and chairman of the Danville-Boyle County Community Education Advisory Board, a member of Grace Presbyterian Church and Danville Rotary Club, and coaches the Dazzling Dribblers, a youth basketball team.

His wife, Rickie Gay, is a ministry assistant at Grace Presbyterian Church. They have three children, Jameson, 18; Jordan, 15; and Jodi, 11.

In his press release, Gay said he worked for the development of Millennium Park, facilitated efforts for the downtown parking garage, advocated for a personnel audit to improve efficiencies within city government, encouraged use of technology to improve communication with citizens, supported use of the Federal Building as the Community Arts Center and worked with city staff to overhaul the personnel policies and compensation plan.

The deadline to file for mayor is Jan. 31. No other candidate has filed for the office.
