November 17, 2005|BRENDA EDWARDS

LIBERTY - City police found a missing 15-year-old girl hiding in a closet Tuesday night when they went to check on the welfare of two children at a Liberty apartment.

The girl, who is from Russell County, had been reported missing in September, police said.

Sgt. Joey Miller went to Carmicleview apartments about 5:30 p.m. after police received a call from a man requesting a check on the welfare of two of his grandchildren, an infant and a 2-year-old.

The children's mother, Amanda Cain, 21, of Adams Street, was spotted attempting to leave in a car with the infant.

The officer went into the apartment to check on the 2-year-old, but the child was not there. He found Jonathan Cundiff, 22, of 3065 Poplar Hill Road, along with a smoking marijuana pipe that was on a coffee table. Miller said Cundiff ran out the back door of the apartment.

Deputy Sheriffs Dennis Allen and Freeman Luttrell were called to assist. During a search, the officers found the 15-year-old girl from Russell County hiding in a closet.

Cain and the girl were placed in the police cruiser, and the grandfather took custody of the infant.

"While I was helping with the search, Cundiff kept sneaking around the cruiser," said Miller. "He took off when Dennis and Freeman arrived." The officers chased Cundiff about 45 minutes before Luttrell apprehended him at Casey County Hospital.

While Miller was at the jail processing the two females, Chad Pittman, 21, of Liberty, dropped the 2-year-old at the Cain apartment, then ran off and left the child alone in the apartment. He was later captured by Allen. Social services took custody of the child.

Cain was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. She also was arrested again Wednesday night and charged with possession of a controlled substance, public intoxication and shoplifting and placed in the detention center, according to Chief Ron Whited.

The 15-year-old girl, reportedly Cundiff's girlfriend, was returned to her parents.

Cundiff was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, public intoxication from drugs, and second-degree evading police officers.

More charges are pending against Cundiff, who was on probation on other charges, Miller said.

Pittman was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor.
