Centre men beat Berea College

BEREA - The Centre College men controlled the boards and dominated the second half as they defeated Berea 69-42 Tuesday night.

Coy Zerhusen had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Colonels (4-1), who won their third straight game.

Centre outrebounded Berea 43-27, getting an additional seven rebounds from Reggie Magnusson.

The Colonels held a 31-24 lead at halftime, then outscored the Mountaineers 38-18 in the second half.

"We controlled the play, especially in the second half," Centre coach Greg Mason said. "We made some adjustments at the half, and the guys executed them tremendously well."

Mason said he was also pleased with Centre's ratio of 17 assists to 15 turnovers.

"That's a lot of player movement, it's good ball movement, it's good passers finding guys open and us obviously knocking down shots," he said.

Centre shot 44 percent from the field, while Berea (3-4) shot just 31 percent.

Zerhusen was 8-for-9 from the field. Matt Jacobson scored 11 points and Thomas Britt added 10 for the Colonels. Magnusson, who entered the game averaging a team-high 17.8 points, was held to six points on 2-for-13 shooting.

"They focused on Reggie and really did a good job of crowding him," Mason said. "Reggie didn't have a night he typically has, but he kicked it out to teammates and they knocked down shots."

Centre opens its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule Saturday at Sewanee.
