The facility is open from 8:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday, and until 4:30 the rest of the week. Hopkins said that the facility may be open on Saturday in the future, but for now, it's closed on weekends.
Patients may also get lab work done, including lipid and cholesterol tests, strep screens, hemoglobin A-1C tests for diabetes, and pregnancy tests. The facility includes six exam rooms, one of which, the pediatric exam room, is decorated with Winnie the Pooh characters.
Hopkins, a West Virginia native, was a registered nurse from 1984-1995, working in critical care units and home health care. When she became a nurse practitioner, she worked in the bone marrow transplant unit at the University of Kentucky, spent a year and a half at a rural health care clinic in Beatyville, and worked at Paragon Family Practice in Lexington for five years before opening the facility in Nicholasville. She said that also, in addition to doing papsmears and other GYN procedures, she can perform a colposcopy, which is a procedure in which a biopsy is done after a woman's pap smear results are found to be abnormal.
Groves said that he and Hopkins choose Nicholasville as the place to locate their facility because there is no hospital here, and such a facility is badly needed. Groves, a Denver, Colo., native who takes care of the administrative and marketing aspects, said Hopkins strives to provide the best care she can for patients.
"Winni is very meticulous about patient care," he said. "Here, all of our patients are VIPs. We don't care what kind of insurance you have, you are a person, and people appreciate being treated with respect."
