Dustun Vest's 3-point goal with just under 30 seconds left in overtime carried the Casey County boys to a 58-56 win over Russell County Thursday night at Russell Springs.

Vest answered a 3-pointer by Russell's Brian Ellis that had cut Casey's six-point lead in half, and the Rebels held off Russell through the final seconds.

Both Vest and Keith Price scored and rebounded in double figures for Casey (1-1). Price had 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Vest had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Casey led 26-18 in the closing seconds of the first half before Russell (1-1) hit a 3-pointer just ahead of the buzzer. The Lakers outscored Casey 21-15 in the third quarter to lead 42-41, and the two teams combined for only 11 points in the fourth period.

Casey coach Perry Walters said the Rebels were much sharper than in their season-opening loss to Anderson County.

"The biggest difference from Monday night was we guarded. We really played much better defense," Walters said.

Casey shot 45 percent from the field, going 18-for-45 overall and 5-for-18 from 3-point range. The Rebels had 31 rebounds, 13 assists and 18 turnovers.

Corey Dial had 11 points, going 6-for-6 at the free-throw line, where Casey was 18-for-26. Jason Sanders was 4-for-4 at the line and had seven rebounds and seven assists.

GIRLS

Burgin 61, Berea 39 - At Berea, Burgin (2-0) dominated the second half to beat Berea (0-1) in a Bluegrass Conference Tournament semifinals.

Bev Harris scored 25 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs, who outscored Berea 37-15 in the third and fourth periods.

Burgin led 19-12 after one period but fell into foul trouble and scored only five points in the second quarter, allowing Berea to gain a 24-all halftime tie.

"We had to regroup at halftime, and we came out and played an excellent second half," Burgin coach Keith Monson said. "I was extremely pleased with the way that we moved the basketball and played defense."

Burgin will play Sayre, a 59-49 winner over Nicholas County, in Saturday night's championship game.

Harris had eight rebounds and five assists to go with her game-high point total, Clara Sanders had 13 points and seven assists and Allyson Burke added 11 points.

Burgin shot 46 percent overall from the field and hit 67 percent (21-for-31) of its shots inside the 3-point line. It also hit 10 of 17 free throws and had 18 assists.

Augusta 50, KSD 12 - At Danville, the Colonels shot just 24 percent from the floor in a home loss to Augusta.

Victoria Thompson led the way for KSD with 10 points and three rebounds, and Amanda Baker had two points and three boards.

"We did improve, scoring 12 points, and I saw some good things on defense," KSD coach Scott Johnson said. "Augusta bothered us with their height, but again the middle school girls showed a lot of effort."

KSD trailed 14-4 after the first quarter and 22-6 at the half.
