Fired Casey teacher's hearing delayed

December 07, 2005|BRENDA S. EDWARDS

LIBERTY - A closed hearing is scheduled Feb. 14-17 for a Casey County Middle School teacher who was fired in November.

Tonia Gosser was fired by Superintendent Linda Hatter Nov. 2, but the reason was not made public. State law says a teacher's employment can be terminated for insubordination, conduct unbecoming to a teacher and neglect of duty.

A three-panel tribunal will be appointed by the state Department of Education commission to conduct an administrative hearing and make the final determination concerning the action.

Gosser had the choice of an open or closed hearing. She chose the closed hearing, which will be held at the Central Office, according to Hatter.

Gosser had been a teacher in the Casey school system for the past three or four years and was a language arts teacher at the middle school at the time of her termination.

Three days after Gosser was fired, seven middle school students walked out of the school in protest of the action. They were suspended three days for their behavior.
