Stuck truck was delivering monuments

December 11, 2005|LIZ MAPLES

The driver of the 18-wheeler that damaged headstones while trying to turn around in Bellevue Cemetery Thursday was trying to deliver a load of monuments to the city.

The truck was pulled out of the mud Friday, and then the cab was replaced with one that could maneuver the cargo through the narrow roads and tight curves in the cemetery.

City Manager Darrell Blenniss said the city accepts deliveries of headstones, but at the public works garage, not at Bellevue or Hilldale cemeteries.

Blenniss said the driver, Mark Grimes of Lexington, told him he thought the cemetery had a through street. Grimes, who was making a delivery for Central Transport, declined to comment Friday.

The driver made a "poor decision" when he drove through the gates of the cemetery, especially in the dark and rain, Blenniss said.

The damaged headstones will be repaired and Blenniss said the city will ask the company for reimbursement.

The gates to the cemetery are locked, but the walking entrance is open.
