High school basketball: Turnovers costly to Boyle late

December 11, 2005|HAL MORRIS

Franklin County's pressure had been forcing Boyle County turnovers all night Friday, and it cost the Rebels late.

Cameron Conner's 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining gave Franklin its only lead of the second half, as they erased a six-point deficit over the final 1:10 to beat the host Rebels 44-42.

"We just finally hit a couple of shots. We've got six seniors, so we expect the guys to make shots like that," Franklin coach Scott Chalk said.

Conner's basket was the last of 24 points Franklin (2-0) scored off 26 Boyle turnovers, while the Rebels (1-1) had just five points off 15 Flyer turnovers.

"That's a great team for us to play early in the season. They were very physical and played very hard, tough defense. They pressure you all over the floor," Boyle coach Ronnie Bottoms said. "We learned some things about our team tonight. Obviously with that many turnovers, it's hard to get a win. But it tells you the kind of effort we're giving to be that close at the end."

Brian Stead kept Boyle in the game, having game-highs of 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots. He also had an assist and steal.

But the 6-9 senior center was also forced to handle the ball in the backcourt a lot thanks to the Flyers' full-court press, which is what Chalk wanted.
