HARRODSBURG - James R Hutchins, 83, of Bardstown, died as a result of injuries received in an accident about 6:37 p.m. Friday on the Harrodsburg bypass.
Mercer County Deputy Sheriff Wes Gaddis reports Hutchins was a passenger in a Pontiac van driven by Carolyn H. Peak, 52, of Hodgenville. Her vehicle was traveling south on the bypass and turned left onto Ky. 152 into the path of a Ford van driven by James M. Doughty, 54, of 494 Handy Pike. Doughty's van was headed north on the bypass.
Doughty's vehicle struck the passenger side of Peak's vehicle. Peak said she did not see any oncoming traffic before she turned, and by the time she heard the other vehicle's horn, there was no way of avoiding the collision. Both drivers said the light was green in the north-south lanes of the roadway. There were skid marks left by Doughty's vehicle, Gaddis reports.
