Options offered for disposal of Christmas trees

December 27, 2005

People anxious to start putting Christmas behind them by getting rid of their trees have a few options for their disposal.

Customers of M&M Sanitation, which contracts with the city of Danville and Boyle County, who want curbside pickup must cut their Christmas trees into three-foot sections, tie them in bundles and place them by the curb. The trees will be removed on the customer's regular pickup day.

"Trees that are not cut up will not be picked up," said Sandy Davis of M&M. "They have to fit on our trucks. If they go on our trucks, they go to the landfill."

Whole trees my be dropped off at Danville's waste water treatment plant off Lexington Avenue or at the Perryville Convenience Center.

Trees brought to the Perryville center must be completely free of tinsel and other decorations that may damage the chipper, said coordinator Donna Fechter.

Christmas trees, along with other plant materials collected throughout the year, help provide free mulch for residents who pick it up at the Perryville center, Fechter said.
