New fitness center 'a nice, family-owned facility'

TammCor Fitness Center opened Monday in Orchard Center.

The facility, located at 143 Orchard Drive, is in the former Winn Dixie building. Owner Jackie Tamminga said she is excited about opening a gym in Nicholasville.

"I've been in this business for 20 years, and this is the fourth club that I've owned, and when I moved to Nicholasville, I thought, 'Wow, this town is in dire need' [of a fitness club]."

Tamminga lives in Lone Oak subdivision with her husband, Keith, who owns TammCor Industries off John Watts Drive.

"We are working to franchise our name," she said. "I'm from Frankfort, and I owned two clubs there. Our mission here [with this club] is to operate a nice, family-owned facility, focusing on the 30-55 year-old age group, the baby boomers, and for people who would not feel so comfortable walking into a mega-club. Our customer service will be outstanding."

Tamminga said her equipment is state-of-the-art.

"The equipment that we have is the number one manufactured brand out there today, and we want to make sure it's user friendly for all kinds of people - skinny people, big people, and people with special needs who may have had a knee replacement, or arthritis."

Tamminga said that an important consideration when she was researching what equipment to purchase was that the seats on the machines should be comfortable.

"I personally got on every singe piece of equipment that we have and tested it," she said. "And with my husband being an engineer in the manufacturing industry, that helped in shopping for equipment."

Every member that joins the club will receive a free orientation and consultation on how to use the equipment. They will get a clipboard and a program card so that they will have their progress on file each time they visit the club.

"We will do this several times until they feel comfortable on the equipment," Tamminga said.

In the cardio area, the machines include treadmills, stair climbers, cross trainers, and bikes.

"We also have a new functional line that is used for therapy and rehabilitation," she said. "It's kind of a cable, pulley-adjustment system where you can do four or five different exercises on one machine."

The equipment is set up to work from upper body muscle groups to lower body groups, Tamminga said. She added that the equipment is also color-coded. The upholstery on the upper body machines is blue, and that on the lower body machines is red.

"There's a little story behind that," she said, laughing. "I went to the University of Louisville, and I was a cheerleader there, and my husband's a UK fan, so that's why it's red and blue."

Free weights are also available, with benches and dumbells.

Exercise equipment also features Cardio theater with head sets.

Fitness classes are available, and include yoga, kickboxing, step classes, and group cycling on stationary bikes.

The facility also features a "mega tanning bed," for members, as well as lockers and shower facilities.

Everything, including classes, is included in the membership, except for tanning, locker rentals, and personal trainers. Members also have unlimited hours when they can come to the club.

Linen service is also available. Hair dryers and toiletries will be furnished.

Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m.
