KSD boys, girls fall at Kentucky Classic

January 08, 2006

Free throws doomed the KSD boys Saturday, as the host Colonels went 11 of 37 at the line in a 62-60 loss to the East North Carolina School for the Deaf in the second day of the Kentucky Classic.

KSD actually led 56-53 late, but could not hang on to the lead.

Travis Zornoza had 20 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals for KSD, Dustin Tipton scored 16 points and Drew Meade had seven points and 10 boards.

KSD fell behind 29-18 at the half, but made it a 45-40 game heading to the fourth quarter.

"We did not execute or attack their defense in the first half," KSD coach Kevin Hamilton said. "We finally attacked them offensively and defensively, but we allowed them to make easy layups. But we played hard and did an outstanding job in the second half."

Victoria Thompson scored 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead KSD, but the Colonels dropped their final game of the Kentucky Classic to the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.

"I was worried about how our emotions would be after playing three games this weekend, in which we had a lot of frustration. But tonight we came out and played with a lot of emotion," KSD coach Scott Johnson said.

"They played tough on defense and they were aggressive on the offensive end of the floor."

Thompson was joined by teammates Alicia Fitzgerald and Bianca Dupree on the all-tournament team.

Shanise White and Charlotte Judge had six rebounds each and Judge scored five points for KSD.

Thompson had seven points and 15 rebounds to lead KSD in a loss to the East North Carolina School for the Deaf.

The Colonels fell behind 21-3 at the half and 36-7 after three quarters.

"The frustration is starting to mount with our team being so young," Johnson said. "But they're putting on a good game face and playing hard."

Boys: Alabama School f/t Deaf 51, KSD 23

The Colonels fell behind 16-3 after the first quarter and could never recover in a loss to the Alabama School for the Deaf.

Alabama is the quickest team we've ever played against. Our boys were not used to that, but did a good job to slow them down," Hamilton said.

Zornoza led KSD with 12 points and Tipton added five.

Alabama jumped out to a 23-8 first-quarter lead and cruised to a win over KSD.

Victoria Thompson, who was saddled with foul trouble in the first half, scored three points and had 17 rebounds, and Charlotte Judge added six points.

"Victoria) missed most of the second quarter with fouls, and that really hurt our chances of finding ways to score, we really fell behind a great distance because of that," Johnson said.

Shanise White pulled down eight rebounds for KSD.
