New Danville traffic light gets green signal

January 10, 2006|TODD KLEFFMAN

The Danville City Commission voted unanimously Monday to endorse a state Department of Transportation plan to install a traffic light on Lexington Avenue at Seminole Trail, though one commissioner abstained because of a lack of detail provided about how the new light would affect traffic flow.

Mayor John W.D. Bowling said the state did not set a schedule for installing the light in asking for the commission's endorsement, but the work is likely to begin soon, within a month or two.

Commissioner Terry Crowley refused to endorse the plan.

"I have a problem sending a letter endorsing this when we don't have any idea what it will look like," Crowley said. "I want it there, but they can come in and put a light in and it could make it worse."

Crowley noted the recent lane changes on Lexington Avenue as a good reason why he didn't like making a blind endorsement. Other commissioners also expressed dissatisfaction with the recent changes, but nobody wanted to do anything to risk delaying the installation of the light.

"For years we have fought for a stoplight out there," Commissioner Alex Stevens said.

Bowling added, "To muddy the waters now would be a mistake."
