Five school systems closed today due to weather

January 18, 2006

Snow showers and icy road conditions forced five of the area's eight school districts to close today and caused an apparent injury accident near Hustonville Tuesday evening and a flipped vehicle north of Harrodsburg this morning.

The Burgin, Danville and Harrodsburg school districts were in session today, after one-hour delays, while the Boyle, Casey, Garrard, Lincoln and Mercer county systems called off classes.

The Lincoln County 911 commuications office received a report at 6:32 p.m. Tuesday of an injury accident at the intersection of U.S. 127 and Ky. 78 near Hustonville. One person was transported by West Lincoln Emergency Medical Services ambulance to a medical facility, a dispatcher said.

Details of the accident and the condition of the transported patient were not available this morning from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department.

Harrodsburg Police Department received a report of an accident early this morning on U.S. 127 in front of the McAfee Market in northern Mercer County.

A vehicle flipped over, but the vehicle's occupant refused treatment at the scene or transportation to a medical facility, the dispatcher said. Meanwhile, state Department of Highways crews started Tuesday evening spreading salt and calcium chloride on major highways in the area, said Michael Williams of the department's Lexington district office.

"All the major roads in the district, including U.S. 27, U.S. 127 and U.S. 150 and other major roads in Boyle, Garrard, Lincoln and Mercer counties, are in good shape," Williams said. "And we expect conditions to improve later on today when temperatures go above freezing."

The National Weather Service forecast for Danville calls for partly cloudy conditions and a high of near 40 degrees this afternoon and mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 50s on Thursday.
