Nicholasville man shot, another in custody

A Nicholasville man was shot Tuesday night during an altercation on Miles Road, according to Nicholasville Police.

The victim, Mathew Cobb, 29, was listed in stable condition at the University of Kentucky Medical Center after having undergone surgery on Tuesday night.

Mark Peel, 27, of 208 Jessamine Avenue, is charged in connection with the shooting.

Peel is charged with first-degree assault, and is lodged in the Jessamine County Detention Center under a $50,000 full cash bond.

Police responded to the call of a shooting at 7:10 p.m. on Miles Road, and found a male victim lying by the side of the road. The man had allegedly been shot by an individual during an altercation that took place inside the truck of the suspected shooter, police said.

According to police, Peel notified police of his whereabouts after he left the scene of the shooting. Police detained him for questioning, but could not ascertain the reason for the shooting, at the time The Jessamine Journal went to press on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said Peel stated that he was defending himself when the shooting occurred.

Peel underwent video arraignment Wednesday morning and was given a court date of March 20 at 2 p.m. in Jessamine District Court.
