Mercer to enforce rules on on political signs

March 17, 2006|ANN R. HARNEY

HARRODSBURG - Mercer County Judge-Executive John Trisler has reminded candidates of election rules, in light of upcoming primary elections.

Trisler said at Tuesday's regular meeting of Mercer County Fiscal Court that political signs cannot be posted on state highway rights-of-way and as of the first of this month, signs posted on rights-of-way will be removed by personnel from the district highway department.

He said the highway department will hold the signs for several days and if they are not retrieved by the candidate, they eventually will be destroyed.

This year's primary election ballot is unusually full of candidates and although the election is two months away, campaign signs are beginning to sprout all over Harrodsburg and Mercer County.

Trisler said a city ordinance also prohibits signs on street rights-of-way. Another law concerning campaign signs is the requirement that the signs state who is paying for the signs, and it has to be specific. It can't say it's paid for by the candidate, but rather must list the candidate's or treasurer's name on the sign.

Addressing another issue, Fiscal Court agreed to give a small piece of land to its neighbors. Trisler explained that a tract of land once owned by the state had been given back to the county. It is a tract of land between Bondville Road and Bluegrass Parkway and it borders property owned by Royal and Nellie Carpenter.

Trisler said he has been contacted by the Carpenters who asked the county to clean up the property. Instead, the county decided to make it surplus property and deed it to the Carpenters.

Mercer County Attorney Douglas Greenburg told magistrates that the property can be given to the couple using a quit claim deed. In answer to a question, Greenburg said that would be the proper way to handle the land and a $1 sale of the property to the Carpenters is not necessary.
