A Nicholasville man pleaded not guilty in Jessamine District Court on Monday in connection with a shooting that occurred last Tuesday.

Mark Peel, 27, of 208 Jessamine Avenue, is charged in connection with the shooting of Mathew Cobb, 29, during an altercation on Miles Road on March 14.

The incident happened at about 7:10 p.m. when police received a call from Peel, who called them after he left the scene of the shooting, according to Nicholasville Police. When police arrived, they found Cobb lying on the side of the road.

Police questioned Peel, who told them that the altercation had occurred in his truck, and that he had only been attempting to defend himself. Police arrested Peel, who was transported to the Jessamine County Dention Center.

Cobb was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, and on Tuesday was listed in stable condition.

Lt. John Branscum said Tuesday that the shooting is still under investigation, and that detectives are looking into Peel's claim of self-defense.

"They are questioning some people who were around the truck at the time," Branscum said. "The justification for the use of deadly force in self-defense is whether he felt he was in danger of physical harm or in fear for his life."

Branscum said he could not elaborate further on the events surrounding the shooting, as the investigation is still incomplete.

Peel is still lodged in the Jessamine County Detention Center under a $50,000 cash bond.

He is charged with first-degree assault, a Class B felony which carries a penalty of 10-20 years in prison.

Peel is scheduled to appear in Jessamine District Court on March 30 at 11 a.m.
