Freedom Salute: National Guard battalion honored in Harrodsburg

The 206th Engineer Battalion of the Kentucky Army National Guard was honored Sunday at Lions Community Center in Harrodsburg during a ceremony titled "Freedom Salute Campaign."

The unit, based in Harrodsburg, returned home Nov. 11 after serving in Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The ceremony recognized the soldiers and the families who supported them at home and abroad.

During Sunday's ceremony, soldiers received an American flag, a commemorative coin, a "Defender of Freedom" certificate, and a lapel insignia. Their spouses and children also received items recognizing their support and contribution.

Harrodsburg Mayor Lonnie Campbell, Mercer County Judge-Executive John Trisler, and state Rep. Milward Dedman Jr., along with Major General Donald Storm, spoke highly of the soldiers and the good that they have been able to accomplish. Storm thanked the families for supporting the troops.

Rita Jones, Deloris Riley, and Shirley Mattingly received Centers of Influence awards.
