Charlie's Auto Repair open for business

May 11, 2006|Mike Moore

From simple tune ups to complete engine overhauls, whatever your automotive repair needs are, Charlie's Auto Repair located at 101 Virginia Lane in Nicholasville can handle it.

Owner Charlie Woodrum got into the automotive repair business by watching and learning from his dad, Irvin.

"My dad was a master mechanic," Charlie said. "I started out when I was about 14 working with him in his shop, and I've been doing it ever since."

Charlie's knack for automotive repair soon took off and he received several years of experience working in different settings.

"I've been doing it for about 18 years, and I've worked at dealerships and small garages," he said. "I'm master certified; I'm ASE (American Service Excellence) master certified, and that covers engine repairs, engine performance, electrical, brakes, steering, suspension, heating and air conditioning, manual transmissions, automatic transmissions."

He is also MAC certified which allows him to work on air conditioning units in vehicles.

With each passing year, the automotive repair profession becomes more and more technology dependent, which requires Charlie to become technology proficient.

"They've just gotten so technical, and they're putting computers on every system," he said. "Before you might have had one computer that ran the power train, but now you've got computers that run the air bags, a computer that runs your climate control ... it's just so much more technical."

In order to keep up with the changing technology, Charlie goes through a rigorous re-certification process with ASE every four years.

A few years ago, Charlie and his wife Amy moved to Florida, but returned to Kentucky late last fall.

"I was raised in Kentucky, and four years ago, me and my wife moved to Florida. We liked it down there, and we had a son (Bodie). We thought he needed to be closer to his grandparents, so we moved back to Kentucky."

Upon returning to the Lexington area, Charlie decided to open his business in Nicholasville.

"We wanted to find a smaller community to settle down," he said.

Charlie's Auto Repair is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 885-6448.
