Patriots, Lady Patriots compete in Plummer Invitational

Low numbers and a young roster of athletes did not work to Lincoln County's advantage in Saturday's 10th annual E. G. Plummer Invitational at Danville.

With over 25 teams converging on Admiral stadium, most loaded with strong varsity talent, Lincoln's middle-school dominated team had trouble keeping up with the competition.

"We're just very young, said Lincoln Coach Julie Fisher. "We just don't have the numbers that these other teams have and most of our athletes are younger.

Despite its youth, the Patriot team did put up some points in the varsity meet with Jordan Wilkinson and Eric Sanders on track and at the head of the field.

Wilkinson, a junior, posted the day's high finish taking second in the 400-meter dash. The race was down to Wilkinson and Danville's Derrick Henderson who led the race from start to finish. The two sprinters had alternated leads and were side-by-side as they made the final turn. Henderson just showed a little more kick in the final 100 pulling head for the win. Henderson's time was 51.30 seconds. Wilkinson crossed in 52.78 seconds to give Lincoln eight of its nine points for the meet.

Sanders, an eighth grade runner, picked up the other point in the 3200-meter run. Sanders was the only non-high school runner to cross in the top 10, placing sixth in a time of 11:11.63.

The Lady Patriots failed to score in the meet, although senior hurdler Whitney Brown came close. Brown finished just out of the points in seventh place in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time in the event was 20.28 seconds.
