Response to naming of pet cemetery

May 16, 2006

Dear Editor,

This is in response to the letter sent in by T. Berry about the naming of the humane society cemetery.

First, the cemetery itself is for use by the citizens of this county to bury their beloved animals. It is only right that this special place have a name. Unfortunately this humane society is a kill shelter and that is sad. It has an effect on the people who work there to have to euthanize these animals that they have visited and played with every day.

I have seen it first hand. I was fortunate enough to get to speak to some of the employees there about this and could read the sadness in the eyes of the gentleman who had this duty. I can vouch for the fact that they are very pro active at DBCHS in getting these animals adopted into caring, loving homes.

As far as your idea that "What kid doesn't want a kitten or puppy jumping from a present at Christmas?" Well, plenty if you ever take a look back and see how humane society populations around the country skyrocket after Christmas.

Lots of parents think "Oh, little Suzie will love to have a cute, cuddly puppy." They do not take into consideration that little Suzie may not be responsible enough for a pet yet and how much devotion and time goes into raising a pet.

The kids are in school and Mom and Dad have to work, so who is looking after the pet, training it, bonding with it? So, back to the humane society they go.

Instead of criticizing the humane society, perhaps you should be urging pet owners to spay and neuter their animals to help decrease the number of unwanted pets that are in humane societies around the country.

Perhaps you can start with the humane society right there in Silver Spring, MD.
