Area storms knock out power, down trees

The storms that ripped across the region last night tore down trees, left thousands without power and kept police busy.

Kentucky Utilities spokesman Brian Phillips said about 5,000 KU customers were in the dark during the height of the storm. Inter-County Energy vice-president Sheree Gilliam said about 3,500 customers lost power.

Garrard County was one of the hardest hit; the storm knocked out electiricity to about 2,000 homes. Gilliam said crews worked all night to restore power.

Danville police responded to a call of a line down on Queen Street and two calls of fallen trees. One report said a tree was on fire, but police were unable to find the fire.

Police also responded to more than 10 false burglary alarms and one false alarm at an ATM.

Lightning reportedly struck at Wal-Mart. A Wal-Mart manager said it did not hit the building.

A scared dog howled constantly, prompting someone to complain. Someone reported the high waters knocked out a bridge on Wilderness Road, and someone in Perryville reported water coming into her home.

Police had to direct traffic at several intersections because of the lights not working. Harrodsburg, Lancaster and several other cities also lost traffic lights.

In Lancaster, police report having to extinguish a blazing tree that was struck by lightning. No one was hurt.

No other major damage has been reported.
