Boyle sheriff suspends deputy for three days

June 07, 2006|TODD KLEFFMAN

Boyle County Deputy Al Isaacs will be suspended three days without pay for his role in the unauthorized disposal of evidence from the sheriff's department's evidence room.

Sheriff LeeRoy Hardin said today that Isaacs will probably serve his suspension in July, after a new schedule for deputies is configured on June 29 and the possible hire of a new deputy.

"I'd like to do it right now and get it over with, but I can't because I've got to have coverage," Hardin said. "That would put me without two deputies, and I can't have that."

Former deputy Merl Baldwin resigned last month after an investigation revealed he put evidence, including pills, marijuana and documents, in a Dumpster behind Dawahare's at Danville Manor shopping center.

Baldwin was assigned the task of cleaning out the evidence room and was supposed to dispose of outdated materials in a Dumpster at the courthouse.

Isaacs assisted Baldwin in taking the evidence to the shopping center Dumpster, after being told by Baldwin that they were authorized to dispose of it there, Hardin said.

"He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

The investigation into the disposal of evidence continues. So far, evidence in "one or two" active cases was improperly handled, and the prosecution of those cases could be compromised, Hardin said. Most of the evidence in question is connected to cases that had already been resolved, the sheriff said.

Hardin is accepting applications for Baldwin's job until June 19 and said he hopes to make a hire soon after that deadline. Having a new deputy on board will make it easier for Isaacs to serve his suspension, Hardin said, since both Isaacs and Baldwin had worked the night shift.

The suspension will cost Isaacs roughly $480 in salary. He earns about $16 an hour and works four 10-hour days each week, Hardin said.
