Storms, squirrel cause power outages

June 12, 2006|ABBY PIPER

Storms swept the region about 6:40 p.m. Sunday, leaving most of Lincoln County without electrical power.

The storm hit Danville, but power remained active until 8:40 this morning when a squirrel got into a substation and caused an outage in northern Danville.

"When something touches the substation, it causes trauma to the system," said Kentucky Utilities spokesman Cliff Feltham.

According to Feltham, the outage began at 8:40 a.m. and lasted until 9 a.m. The 20-minute power hiatus was one of few outages in the area not caused by Sunday night's storm.

"We may have had a handful of power bumps, but no outages, nothing of large substance," said Feltham. "Especially compared to the 11,000 customers out of power in Lexington."

Traffic lights went out briefly in Danville, but no problems were reported.

Inter-County Energy reported outages in Lincoln, Boyle, Garrard and Marion counties, putting a total of 3,000 people out of power.

Sheree Gilliam, vice president of customer services, said Lincoln County had 70 percent of those outages.

"The Geneva-McKinney area was hit hardest," said Gilliam. "Outages in the other counties were scattered."

Inter-County outages began at 6:40 p.m. Sunday when strong winds knocked down power lines.

Workers were out all night, restoring power by 5:30 a.m. today.
