History of Parksville Baptist Church

June 16, 2006

* Parksville Baptist Church was founded on Aug. 19, 1923, when the congregation of Clems Chapel Church, located on Pumpkin Run Road, voted to move the church to Parksville and rename it Parksville Baptist Church.

* The new church's first services were held in a rented building, which was formerly known as the Parksville Presbyterian Church. On Sept. 23, 1923, Parksville Baptist called Frank Cockren as its first pastor.

* The lot that formed the property on which the current church building is located was purchased on Jan. 14, 1924. Groundbreaking on the building was held soon thereafter. The first service in the incompleted building was held on the third Sunday of August 1924. The first six deacons were elected on Aug. 30, 1924, and they were: Harry B. Elmutt, Harve Satterly, James Coyle, H.C. Graham, Ben Hilliard and John Urton.

* The building was completed and totally paid for in 13 months at a total cost of $7,000. The building was dedicated on March 25, 1925.

* The first major construction project at Parksville Baptist was conducted 1963-64 when a two-story education building was erected. The education building consisted of 14 classrooms for Sunday school and church training, plus a full basement.

* The next major project occurred 1970-71 when the congregation approved and implemented a plan to conduct a complete renovation of the church building. The church set aside more than $30,000 and hired Yankey Brothers of Perryville to do the renovation. The exterior part of the project included a new front entrance, roof, windows and blacktopping of the parking lot and the interior part of the project consisted of a new baptistery, furniture, lighting and wall-to-wall carpeting. The newly-renovated church was dedicated on Sept. 12, 1971.

* Later additions of property and facilities and renovations in the 1980s included: purchase of property behind the church from Nelson Powell for $10,000 in 1976; paving of a new parking lot behind the education building in 1982; construction of a parsonage, shelter and roof hip on the education building for $80,000, beginning in 1982.

* Later additions of property and facilities and renovations in the 1990s included: Installation of new carpet and reupholstering of the pews in the sanctuary in 1993; installation of air conditioning and new furnaces in 1997; installation of new light fixtures and a sound system in 1999.

* Later additions of property and facilities and renovations in the 2000s included: Installation of new carpeting in 2000; purchase of .6 acres bordering the church from the White family for $5,000 in 2001; purchase of a new 15-passenger van in 2001; replacement of all carpeting in the education building, except for the basement, in 2002; groundbreaking for new Family Ministry Center, including ball court, walking track, classrooms and kitchen, in 2004; completion of the $421,000 center in December; dedication of the center on June 24.
