Dear Editor,
I am sorry that Michael Sanders took his own life. I didn't know him nor am I familiar with the church at which he worked. But I do know that suicide claims twice as many lives every year as homicide.
I also know that nearly all people who commit suicide have an underlying mental illness that can be treated. I also know, unfortunately, that when many church-goers suffer from a mental illness they don't feel that they can tell their fellow church members.
That is a shame. There is no more powerful a cure for mental illness than a combination of doctors, medicine, talk therapy, God, ministers and fellow Christians. I challenge other Christians to respond to the mental health needs of their brothers and sisters in Christ.
