Tips on rain barrels

June 22, 2006

Tips from Bluegrass Personal Responsibility In A Desirable Environment on rain barrels:

* Do not drink rainwater.

* Don't allow water to overflow and saturate the ground around a home's foundation. Use an overflow pipe or adjustable diverter to direct water away from homes.

* Put the barrel on cinder block.

* Wooden rain barrels should always contain 3 to 5 gallons of water. This prevents the barrel from drying out and shrinking.

* Shake the rain barrel before using the rainwater. This helps prevent sediment build-up on the bottom of the barrel.

* If the rain barrel is connected to a gutter, install a guard to keep leaves and pine needles out of the rain barrel. Another way to keep debris out is to cover the barrel with a screen.

* Empty the rain barrel a week after a rainfall to prevent water from becoming stagnant.

* Use a mosquito dunk, a biological insect control, or mosquitofish, a small fish that eats mosquito larvae. A mosquitofish may need half a barrel of water to remain healthy. This cuts down on the amount of water that can be used out of the barrel. Do not release the mosquitofish into local waterways. It is not native to Kentucky and may disrupt the ecological balance.

* PRIDE has rain barrels for sale. Wooden barrels are $160 or $115 for 55-gallon barrel. For more information, call PRIDE toll free at (866) 222-1648 or e-mail prideinfo@kentuckypride.com. Web site: www.kentuckypride.com
