Lightning strike causes power outage

July 06, 2006

Lightning caused a power outage for 4,715 Kentucky Utilities customers Wednesday from about 6 a.m. until 7:20 a.m., said KU spokesman Cliff Feltham.

The outage affected KU customers in Lincoln, Boyle, and Garrard counties, Feltham said.

"We're not sure what the lightning hit," he said, "but it caused enough trauma to the system that it did what it's supposed to do, which was switch off."

The outage kept Stanford firefighters hopping as they investigated false alarms triggered by the outage, said Stanford Fire Chief Ken McDaniels.

Firefighters cleared the McDonald's restaurant of smoke after its exhaust fan quit during the outage, McDaniels said.

Aside from relatively minor inconveniences, city officials reported problems related to the outage.
